ATA-Houston marked the 95th Anniversary of the opening of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey with two grand events that paid tribute to our National Sovereignty and Children’s Day.

What a great week it was. First, we were thrilled to know that our Mayor Annise Parker acknowledged ATA-Houston’s request and proclaimed April 23rd, 2015 as Turkish Heritage and Children’s Day in Houston.

This is always very special and very exciting. On behalf of all of you, we presented this proclamation to our Consul-General, Mr Ferhat Alkan during a program held at our Consulate on Thursday, April 23rd. All the kids in attendance that afternoon were treated to a surprise Karagoz&Hacivat show and enjoyed taking turns sitting in our Consul-General’s chair. One could already see the future leaders in them. Their excitement was contagious.

Second, on Sunday April 26th, we had our traditional, more-wonderful-with-each-passing-year picnic and we were honored by the participation of close to 300 hungry guests. We were the cooks and servers, we were the hosts and guests, we were the setup and cleanup crew, and we were once again reminded of what an amazing community we all share.

Our kids had a day filled with laughter, and fun games while the families enjoyed a beautiful day in the sun. Our kids donated an astounding $88.73 all in coins. You can see them dropping their coins in our collection jar in the photos below. Each one of them received a piggy bank with ATA-Houston logo on it. This donation will go to Make a Wish Foundation on their behalf. We hope they continue to save in their piggy banks and donate to many nobel causes.

If you enjoyed this event, please remember to thank our amazing picnic committee and all the volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this a truly memorable celebration. A wise person once said, the spark can come from an individual, but for sustained momentum, flames, heat and energy must come from the community. Thank you for being that community.
