* Who should complete the Census form?
The head of household should complete the form on behalf of every person living in the residence on April 1, 2010, including relatives and non-relatives.
* What do I do about people who live with me occasionally?
You should count people who are living in your home on April 1, 2010. Do not include any family members living somewhere else on that date. They will be counted where they are living.
* Does the Census Bureau share information with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Internal Revenue Service, courts or police?
No. It is against the law for the Census Bureau to give personally identifiable information about an individual to any other individual or agency until 72 years after it is collected for the decennial Census. Anyone breaking this law is subject to jail, a fine, or both.
* When do we complete and return the census questionnaire?
The questionnaires will arrive in your mail box in mid-March, 2010. After completing the form, you should mail it back to the Census Bureau by Census Day, April 1, 2010.
* Not a U.S. Citizen?
The census is a count of everyone residing in the United States: in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, and American Somoa. This includes people of all ages, races, ethnic groups, both citizens and non-citizens. So even if you are not a U.S. citizen but you live and sleep in the U.S. most of the year, you will be counted in the census.
* An international student?
As the above point explains, the census is a count of everyone residing in the United States. The Census Bureau is mandated by the Constitution to count everyone who lives in the country, regardless of immigration or citizenship status. So even if the U.S. is not your country of citizenship, if you live and sleep in the U.S. most of the year, you will be counted in the census.

| ATA Houston Annual Survey - 2010 |

Thank you for participating in our first survey. We collected 67 answers in less than a month. We hope to reach out to wider audiences and would like to recruit more volunteers and members; your responses have been quite helpful. You can find tabulated results here; below is a summary:
- You were mostly very satisfied with activities in 2009.
- You support similar activities in 2010 in addition to some new activities such as professional networking events, Turkish art exhibits, Turkish film festival and Turk Sanat Muzigi (Classical Turkish Music) concerts.
- You prefer activities in Galleria, Montrose and Downtown areas.
- You find our web site useful enough but would like to see improvements in terms of its looks and timeliness of its contents.
- You support our two new education initiatives, Education Fund and Turkish Women's League.
- You overwhelmingly support Turkish Culture Center.
As we embark on new activities to address at least some of the expectations from the survey, we invite you to join us and/or to support us financially. Many of you expressed an interest in volunteering and/or donating. Please contact us to volunteer; you can donate online using the ATA Shop.
ATA-Houston is run by volunteers only; activities are organized based on membership fees, entrance fees, individual donations and corporate sponsorships. Annual budget for the organization changes from year to year depending on activities; it was close to $100,000 in 2009. 19th Annual Turkish Festival was the single largest item with a budget close to $80,000. Clearly, we depend on individual donations and corporate sponsorships to a great extent. We strive to offer as many free events to our members as possible but our ability to do so is often curtailed by limited funds. The more volunteers and more donations we have, the more activities we can organize and more of them can be offered free of charge.
So, please join ATA-Houston, donate and encourage your companies to become sponsors so that the association can continue to present Turkish Culture in Houston and serve the Turkish-American community better.

National History Day - Third Placement: Ataturk - Legacy of a Secularist

In the beginning of 08-09 school year, Tasnim Mohamed, Dimas Gonzales, Jonathan Espinoza, Nernwon Kargou, and Alejandro Suazo, junior students at the Eisenhower High School, were looking for a topic to cover in their National History Day quest (www.nhd.org). Then they came across a National Geographic documentary on the Middle East, which started with how Atatürk was able to create a secular, democratic republic in this region. They were captured by his accomplishments and, in particular, his legacy of secularism, which ended up shaping the focus and title of their documentary: Legacy of a Secularist.
Under the guidance of their teacher, Ms. Debra Brown, the team started the year-long adventure. The first competition was within the school. There were a total of 30 entries; at the end they competed against six other documentaries. They were placed first.
Next came the district competition against own grade level. They competed against eight other entries. They were placed first again.
On to the regional competition, where they had to compete against all grade levels from all the high schools in the region. This time, they were placed second to a documentary on the first baseball manager to play an African-American in his team. But, they were qualified to go to the state competition in Austin, last stop before the national contest.
Driven by their second place finish, the team worked even harder to convey better what they believed to be unique achievements of a truly distinguished statesman against all odds. They interviewed tens of people, and read hundreds of pages of history. They were able to sift through the noise and get to the essence of Atatürk’s legacy.
At the state competition, there were a total of 48 entries from all grade levels. In the first phase of the competition, they placed first against 11 entries. In the second phase, they placed second again to the baseball documentary. But, the second place was good enough; they were going to the national contest.
The 2008-2009 NHD national contest was held June 14-18 at the University of Maryland. The year-long, hard work of Nernwon, Tasnim, Dimas, Alejandro and Jonathan paid off. They were placed third among 84 entries in the finals. Now, they would like to visit Atatürk’s Republic.
ATA-Houston congratulates them for a well-deserved national placement.
